Flags of Our Fathers
Date: Monday :: November 13 :: 2006
< Fayelle >
On Feb. 23, 1945, in a snapshot, a war-weary American public was to be prompted back to unity regarding WWII. And I mean a literal “snapshot.” The scene captured six faceless marines raising an American flag atop Mount Suribachi. Flags of Our Fathers tells the story of the three surviving young men from the photo as they tour the United States attempting to raise money for the war effort. The government calls on them to play the part of war heroes and captivate the hearts of Americans as they re-invent the flag scene over and over again. The tour is successful in raising hope for victory as well as war bonds, but it takes its toll on Doc, Rene and Ira, who are forced to relive their traumatizing experiences from Iwo Jima over and over again.

Five years after the disaster, and it still crosses our minds almost daily, whether we are remembering those lost, following national politics, or simply waiting in the security checkpoint at the airport.
